‘Washing Dirty Linen in Public’: Delhi High Court Slams Rs 30,000 Crore Sunjay Kapur Inheritance War

A bitter inheritance dispute over late industrialist Sunjay Kapur’s vast estate has drawn sharp criticism from the Delhi High Court, which remarked that the family was “washing dirty linen in public” while fighting over assets estimated at nearly ₹30,000 crore.

Massive Family Dispute Reaches Delhi High Court

The high-profile legal battle involves Sunjay Kapur’s mother, Rani Kapur, and his third wife, Priya Kapur, along with other family members, over control and distribution of the late businessman’s assets.

As arguments unfolded, the Delhi High Court expressed discomfort over the nature of allegations being aired openly, stressing that sensitive family matters of this kind should ideally not turn into public spectacles.

What the Inheritance Row Is About

At the heart of the dispute is the RK Family Trust, which controls a large portion of the Kapur family’s wealth.

Rani Kapur has approached the court claiming that:

  • The trust was created without her free and informed consent
  • She was allegedly pressured into signing documents during a vulnerable period
  • The trust should be declared void and illegal

She has argued that the arrangement effectively deprived her of her rightful share in her son’s estate.

Priya Kapur Rejects Allegations

Priya Kapur has firmly denied all accusations.

Her side has maintained that:

  • The trust was formed lawfully
  • Asset transfers were done transparently
  • No fraud or coercion was involved

She has also pointed out that parts of the estate have already been distributed as per legal provisions and that some assets fall outside the jurisdiction of Indian courts.

Children From Previous Marriage Also Stake Claim

The dispute has further widened with Samaira Kapur and Kiaan Kapur, Sunjay Kapur’s children from his marriage to actor Karisma Kapoor, also raising objections.

Their claims include:

  • Questioning the validity of a purported will
  • Seeking protection of their rights as Class I legal heirs
  • Alleging that their inheritance interests have not been adequately safeguarded

These competing claims have added multiple layers to the already complex case.

Court Urges Mediation, Flags Public Mud-Slinging

During the hearing, the Delhi High Court urged the parties to consider:

  • Mediation instead of prolonged litigation
  • Avoiding personal allegations in open court
  • Finding an amicable solution to prevent long-term family damage

The court noted that such public legal battles often leave lasting scars and complicate resolution.

Who Was Sunjay Kapur?

Sunjay Kapur was a well-known industrialist and former chairman of Sona Comstar, a major auto components company with global operations. He passed away in June 2025 in London.

Following his death, disagreements over his business interests, trusts and personal assets soon escalated into legal action.

The Delhi High Court is yet to deliver its final ruling, but the case has already become one of India’s most closely watched inheritance battles due to the scale of wealth involved and the prominence of the family.
