Supreme Court Panel to Begin 3-Day On-Site Inspection of Karur Stampede from December 1

Justice-led Committee to Scrutinize Rally Site, Crowd Control and Permissions

A Supreme Court-appointed panel will begin a three-day inspection of the Karur stampede site on December 1. The team will check what led to the tragic incident that killed 41 people and left over 60 injured during a political rally on September 27.

What The Panel Will Check

The committee, headed by retired Supreme Court judge Justice Ajay Rastogi, will look at:

  • How the rally area was planned
  • What permissions were taken
  • How crowd control was arranged
  • Whether emergency services were ready
  • How the stampede started

Officials who approved the rally and supervised security will also meet the panel.

Why The Inspection Is Happening

The Supreme Court handed the case to the CBI for an independent investigation. To ensure transparency, the court formed a three-member team to oversee the entire process.

The oversight panel includes:

  • Justice Ajay Rastogi (Chairperson)
  • Two senior IPS officers from outside Tamil Nadu

This was done to avoid any conflict of interest.

Next Steps

After checking the site, meeting officers, and reviewing documents, the panel will submit a detailed report to the Supreme Court.
This report will help decide:

  • Whether safety rules were violated
  • If poor planning led to the deaths
  • Who should be held responsible

The CBI will continue its investigation based on these findings.
