Iran Accuses US of Never Being Serious About Nuclear Talks

President Pezeshkian blames Trump-era diplomacy failures, says “wall of mistrust” with US remains high

Iran’s President Criticizes US Over Failed Nuclear Negotiations

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on Friday accused the United States of lacking sincerity in nuclear negotiations, particularly during the administration of President Donald Trump.

Speaking on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York, Pezeshkian said multiple opportunities for progress had been missed due to US behavior.

“The wall of mistrust between us and the Americans is quite high,” he stated.
“We came to understandings a number of times, but they were never taken seriously by the Americans.”

Talks Collapsed Amid Israeli Strikes and US Ambiguity

The Iranian president emphasized that Washington failed to act even during critical periods, including in the lead-up to Israeli military actions in the region.

While he did not elaborate on specific details, his remarks appear to reference secret or informal backchannel understandings that the US allegedly abandoned.

Longstanding Diplomatic Freeze

Iran and the US have had a tense diplomatic relationship since the US pulled out of the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) under the Trump administration in 2018.

Efforts to revive the nuclear deal have repeatedly stalled over issues like:

  • Iran’s uranium enrichment levels
  • US sanctions
  • Israel’s growing opposition to Iranian nuclear capabilities

Summary of Key Points:

  • Iranian President Pezeshkian says the US was never serious about nuclear deal talks.
  • He claims the US ignored multiple understandings reached over time.
  • Blames the Trump administration for eroding trust with Iran.
  • Comments made during the 2025 UN General Assembly in New York.
