Imran Khan To Be Shifted To New Islamabad Jail With Medical Facilities: Pakistan Minister

Former Pakistan prime minister and PTI founder Imran Khan is likely to be moved from his current prison to a newly planned Islamabad jail with full medical facilities once it is completed, the country’s Interior Minister has said.

Islamabad Jail Transfer Plan

Pakistan’s Federal Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi told reporters that a modern prison facility is being constructed in Islamabad, expected to be ready within the next two months.

He said the intention is to transfer Khan to this new jail because:

  • It has comprehensive medical and rehabilitation facilities
  • Khan was sentenced by a court in Islamabad, making it appropriate to keep him in the capital

Naqvi’s remarks came during a media interaction in Islamabad where he said the facility will include specialist healthcare options to treat various illnesses without repeated external hospital transfers.

Context: Khan’s Health Concerns

The announcement comes amid growing concerns over Khan’s health while in custody at Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi. Reports submitted to Pakistan’s Supreme Court indicate Khan has suffered significant vision loss in his right eye, with legal counsel stating it dropped to about 15% vision, and alleged delays in medical treatment have been criticised by his supporters.

In response, the Supreme Court has ordered a medical examination and allowed Khan to be examined by specialist doctors of his choice.

Official Statements And Reactions

The federal government maintains that once the new facility is ready, Khan should be relocated there in line with legal and logistical norms. Naqvi emphasised that the jail’s medical infrastructure would support inmates’ needs.

Meanwhile, leaders from Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party have expressed serious concerns about his health and treatment conditions, leading to protests and sit-ins. They have urged authorities to ensure proper medical care, including access to private physicians.
